Get the Dirt on Companies' Business Ethics

Buycott reveals where companies' money goes

Supporting small businesses feels good because you can see just who and what you’re supporting.

But when you support big companies, no matter how good the product, you can’t always be sure where your money is going and what’s being done with it.

To help you make more informed purchasing decisions, 26-year-old programmer Ivan Pardo created Buycott, an iPhone and Android app that digs up the dirt on the companies whose products you buy.

Scan any product’s barcode and the app displays a circuitous tree of ownership leading back to the product’s parent company. From there you can determine the company’s political and fiscal connections to see if they conflict with your ideals.

It works backwards, too. Select causes you care about – say, Demand GMO Labeling or Support Fire Safety in Bangladesh – and Buycott can tell you what companies to avoid.

Now you and your wallet can be on the same page.
