It’s no secret that America’s schools need help. But how can an average person make sure things improve?
Enter DonorsChoose, an online charity that provides classroom materials to schools in need, assisted by your monetary pledges.
Here’s how it works: Teachers log onto the site and post a “project request” with a list of materials they need. Donors—that includes you, hopefully—get to choose which projects to support, and how much they want to contribute.
You can see how much money each project needs in a small bar graph in each project listing. Once you donate, they’ll update the total so you can see how much of an impact you made.
To help kids who are studying specific topics, segregate your search results by subject. You could send an old trumpet to a brass band in Idaho, or maybe microscope slides to a biology class in Los Angeles.
The best part: you get photos of your project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent.
Give more than $100 and you’ll also receive hand-written thank you letters from the students.
And the children, of course, are our future.
